Basic Handling SkillsThe basic handling skills course is the first step in your roadcraft and is designed to fit in with the graduated licensing system to enable the rider to develop their skills in a safe environment prior to undertaking the NZTA Basic handling skills assessment. On successful completion of the assessment the rider is presented with a certificate that can be used as part of the process to gain a learner licence. We offer training options for both new and experienced riders, with a test only option available for those who feel they do not require any training.
New riders
The basic handling skills test and training course for new riders is provided as a first step in motorcycling and is aimed at familiarising the rider with the techniques required to start, stop and control a motorcycle. Our experienced instructors will work with you to help you gain confidence with the bike and build on your achievements. Instruction is given on the following:
Upon mastering the core control skills, the rider will be coached on the exercises required for the basic handling skills test Course time up to 2½ hours (test will be conducted within last 20 minutes for candidates that achieve the required level of proficiency) We set our course duration and content based on many years of experience in coaching riders to test standard with a high pass rate for first time riders. However we recognise that some riders take a little longer to become proficient. If additional training is required to achieve test standard following one of our scheduled training courses, we can offer this at our standard hourly rate by arrangement.
Experienced riders
We also offer a basic handling skills test and training option for riders who already have the core skills of balance, throttle control, gear changing, cornering and braking. The emphasis on this course is to consolidate core skills and specifically coach the rider through the exercises required for the basic handling skills test. At the end of the course the basic handling skills test will be conducted if the rider has shown the capability to ride up to test standard throughout the coaching phase. Course time up to 1½ hours (test will be conducted within last 20 minutes for candidates that achieve the required level of proficiency) All riders are welcome to use a bike from the well maintained Riderskills™ fleet at no extra charge, or alternatively bring your own motorcycle and we can help you to become familiar with it.
